South / East Brisbane Corporate Volunteering Day
On Sunday 29th November, 26 SNP staff and their family members participated in rehabilitating the waterway corridor and parkland at Oates Hill, Carina. Phillips Creek begins in Whites Hill Reserve and flows to Bulimba Creek, via Oates Hill. Oates Hill is home to threatened and rare species including squirrel gliders, koalas, and powerful owl as well as a wide variety of birds, possums, insects and reptiles.
The B4C (Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee) Environmental Services Unit had previously done site preparation of herbicide treatment, mulch spreading and hole digging. Sullivan Nicolaides staff were given a safety induction and training into the method of planting to achieve maximum survival rates (soaking plants in water, use of plant tablets, hydrocell and soil). Staff then worked in teams of three, with 4 B4C staff supervising and assisting.
A total of 530 plants were established, providing waterway connectivity, habitat and food source for wildlife in this biodiverse-rich area.

As the temperature was approximately 35C, frequent drink breaks were taken as well as morning tea and a barbecue lunch. This was prepared and served by 2 further B4C staff.
B4C will return to water and maintain the plants for the next four months.
The local bushcare group will also monitor the plantings. Four members of the group came to morning tea and one took the volunteers on a guided walk of the bushland, showing and explaining to them the connectivity of Phillips Creek to Oates Hill, Whites Hill Reserve and Bulimba Creek.
