Dr Andrew Mayer is a histopathologist at Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology's Lismore laboratory. Having worked in public and private diagnostic pathology in a rural setting for almost 20 years, he has a depth of expertise across a broad range of general surgical pathology with particular interests in breast, gastrointestinal and skin pathology.
Dr Mayer graduated with Honours from the University of Sydney in 1989 and went on to clinical residency at the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney. He undertook a year of training in forensic pathology at the NSW Institute of Forensic Medicine in Glebe, followed by a further five years of training in anatomical pathology at the Institute of Clinical Pathology and Medical Research (ICPMR) at Westmead Hospital, including rotations to Liverpool Hospital and Breast Screen NSW - Sydney West.
Dr Mayer gained Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 1998. The same year, he moved to the Lismore Base Hospital where working in a major public teaching hospital delivering specialist services to a large rural catchment he developed expertise across a wide range of diagnostic pathology. In 2009, Dr Mayer joined SNP. He is strongly committed to maintaining an active role in the local medical community and believes the close working relationships that can be developed in a rural area are particularly helpful in providing high standards of patient care. He attends regular interdisciplinary clinical meetings with colleagues in other specialities to review and discuss cases. He is the SNP representative on the St Vincent's Hospital Medical Advisory Committee.
