Dr Ben Ryan is a consultant dermatopathologist at Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, Brisbane.
He graduated in Medicine from the University of New South Wales in 2001 and undertook his medical internship in Newcastle, rotating through several public and private hospitals in the area.
After a year as a junior doctor at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide, he made the decision to undertake specialist training in anatomical pathology and moved to Perth where he trained at several hospitals including the Sir Charles Gardner Hospital, the King Edward Memorial Hospital, the St John of God Hospital, and the Princess Margaret Hospital.
Dr Ryan was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2010, he joined the SNP's Skin Laboratory in the same year.
In 2013, he spent time at the Ackerman Academy, New York, which he believes was helpful in providing him with a broader perspective into different approaches to skin investigation and diagnosis.
Dr Ryan takes an active role in training and mentoring registrars and junior pathologists and in particular, is involved in internal research projects with registrars helping them develop poster presentations. He also enjoys a role running microscopy sessions for general practitioners with an interest in dermatopathology.
He has memberships of the Australasian Dermatopathology Society and the International Academy of Pathology (Australasian Division). He attends national and international conferences.
Dr Ryan enjoys the problem-solving nature of pathology and dermatopathology in particular, because of the great variety of pathology within the one speciality.
