Gynaecological and breast pathology
Dr Diane Spearritt is a consultant histopathologist at Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology's Toowoomba laboratory. She reports across all areas of surgical pathology with special interests in gynaecological and breast pathology. She also supervises clinical testing and venesection.
Dr Spearritt graduated in Medicine from The University of Queensland in 1986 with First Class Honours and a University Medal. She completed her internship at the Princess Alexandra hospital, Brisbane and after a year in haematology, she went on to train in anatomical pathology The Mater Misericordiae and Princess Alexandra hospitals. Dr Spearritt was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 1993 and moved to Toowoomba the following year to take up a role in the public sector. She joined SNP in 2003.
Working in a large and busy regional practice she has developed expertise across a broad range of surgical pathology with her main areas of interest being gynaecological and breast pathology. She is participates in the many regular multidisciplinary clinical meetings with colleagues in other specialities held to review and discuss cases. She also supervises venesection at SNP's St Andrew's Hospital collection rooms.
As part of her role, Dr Spearritt supervises clinical laboratory testing. Working as part of a team that involves all practice personnel is an aspect of her job that gives her great personal satisfaction. Being a regional and therefore smaller, laboratory, there are more opportunities for daily interaction with scientists, lab technicians, collectors and support staff: "We're in and out of collection rooms and we're talking to everyone in the lab which means we're very much part of the lab community. This has advantages in the way we can support our patients."
