Dr Kencian gained her medical qualifications at the University of Newcastle, graduating with Honours and second in year in 1985. She went on to train in anatomical pathology at Royal North Shore Hospital, gaining Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Fellowship in 1992. She has published a number of articles related to anatomical and forensic pathology. Her interest in skin pathology was sparked during a time working with Professor David Weedon at Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, Southport in 1993.
She lived and worked in Far North Queensland for over 20 years and remains strongly committed to the provision of quality regional pathology services as well as taking an active role in the local medical community. She is currently SNP's Pathologist-in-Charge of the Wide Bay region and Northern Territory, the latter from 2014.
Dr Kencian has maintained a long standing commitment and connection to the wider pathology community. She served for a number of years as the designated Pathologist for FNQ with Breast Screen Queensland and the Cairns representative on the Queensland Breast Screen Q Group. She was also the North Queensland representative on the Queensland Cervical Register Working Party designing and implementing the State's Pap smear registry.
In 2014, she retired from the Board of the International Academy of Pathologists - Australasian Division (IAP-AD) after 10 years, the last four as honorary treasurer.
Dr Kencian is in her second term as the inaugural honorary treasurer/secretary of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) and a member of the RCPA Developing Communities Working Party (DCWP).
