Dr Sarah Cherian is a senior microbiologist and Pathologist-in-Charge of Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology's Bowel Cancer Screening Laboratory. Her career began when she was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree (with Honours) by The University of Queensland after majoring in microbiology of infectious diseases. She went on to study medicine and graduated in 1983.
She trained in clinical microbiology at The Royal Brisbane Hospital and The Mater Hospital, and obtained experience in notifiable diseases, working with the Queensland Government, at the Metro /Brisbane South Public Health Unit. She also engaged in research in molecular microbiology at The University of Queensland and was admitted to Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) in 1999.
Dr Cherian joined SNP in 2001 where she is involved in all aspects of clinical microbiology. She shares in the responsibility for day-to-day management of the Department of Microbiology, and has an active role in the development of in-house serology, and more recently in the development of molecular tests where there are many technological advances being made in nucleic acid sequencing, arrays and mass spectrometry for the diagnosis of infectious diseases. She has a particular interest in hepatitis. She is on the Infection Control Committees of St. Andrew's and Wesley Hospitals.
Dr Cherian is also actively involved in registrar training and ongoing professional development as the RCPA training co-ordinator for Queensland and the RCPA National Webinar series co-ordinator for microbiology. She is a member of National and International Societies of Microbiology and Antimicrobials. She serves on the Microbiology Advisory Committee of the RCPA. With a long-standing commitment to the broader pathology community and advancing professional standards, she is the Chair of the Queensland State Council of the RCPA, and is the Queensland representative on its National Committee.
