Microbiology department

Microbiology has a national reputation as a reference laboratory in esoteric testing for molecular microbiology. It pioneered the use of molecular assays in identifying infectious diseases and has developed a series of NATA-accredited in-house molecular assays for a wide range of infectious organisms including almost  all viral work, bacterial infections, enteric pathogens and free living pathogenic amoebae. Accredited molecular assays have also been developed for routine and non-routine STIs and zoonoses such as Q fever and leptospirosis, plus a wide range of bacteria antimicrobial resistance genes.
