Billing policy

Patient groups

 Community patients

For patients who are eligible for a Medicare rebate, SNP bulk bills routine pathology tests for the following patients:

Patients with a current:

  • Pension (PHB) Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Veterans Affairs Card
  • Commonwealth Seniors card
  • Nursing home patients

Complex tests are not bulk billed. The cost of these tests will be discussed during the booking process.

Private patients will receive an account for their pathology tests. The maximum gap payable is $150 per account for Medicare eligible tests. Please note this does not apply to hospital patients - refer to 'Hospital Patients' section below.

 Overseas patients

Overseas patients will be asked to pay at the time of collection.

Please contact our Patient Services Support Centre for further information on 1300 732 030 or patientservices@snp.com.au

 Hospital patients

Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology has "no-gap" arrangements with the great majority of Private Health Funds.

Your account for Medicare eligible tests performed while you are in hospital will be sent to your health fund for full payment.

Uninsured patients, and patients who are insured by funds that do not have a "no-gaps" agreement, will receive an account.

The maximum gap payable is $630 (above the schedule fee) per hospital stay. Please refer to Pathology Accounts for Hospital Patients for more information.

FAQs

If you hold a current Medicare card, your tests could be eligible for a Medicare rebate.

The Department of Health and Aged Care is responsible for administering the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) that specifies which tests are eligible for a rebate.

For more information about Medicare rebates, contact Services Australia on 132 011 or visit their website, servicesaustralia.gov.au/medicare

Some pathology tests are not eligible for a Medicare rebate. If you have non-rebateable tests performed, you will receive an account.

Tests requested in any of the following circumstances are not eligible for a Medicare rebate:

  • employment
  • health screening
  • immigration
  • insurance
  • superannuation
  • travel
  • Work Cover
  • visa applications

Other tests may only be eligible for a Medicare rebate where the patient satisfies certain conditions.
