Sticky tape test for pinworm
During the night, pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis) deposit their eggs in the area around the anus. In this test you will use a cellulose-tape slide (like the one illustrated below) to collect a sample that will be examined for the presence of pinworm eggs.
You MUST perform this test directly after you (or the person who you are administering the test to) wake in the morning, and you MUST NOT shower or wipe your anal region before you perform the test.
You should wear surgical gloves during this test.
Please DO NOT use opaque sticky tape or wrap multiple layers of tape around the slide as both are unsuitable for microscopy.
Step 1 Obtain a cellulose-tape slide, surgical gloves and a tongue depressor from your nearest Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology collection centre. For your nearest collection centre, please refer to your request form, visit our collection centre locations, or telephone Patient Services Support on 1300 732 030.
Step 2 You MUST perform this test directly after you wake in the morning, and you MUST NOT shower or wipe your anal region before you perform the test.
Hold the slide against the tongue depressor about one inch from the end and lift a long portion of tape from the slide.
Step 3 Loop the tape over the end of the tongue depressor to expose the tape’s gummed surface. DO NOT wrap multiple layers of tape around the slide.
Step 4 Hold tape and slide firmly against the tongue depressor.
Step 5 Press the gummed surfaces of the tape against the area around the anus to collect the sample.
Step 6 Replace the tape on the slide. Please keep the slide at room temperature and return it to your nearest collection centre as soon as possible.
